When cruising at a steady speed, your car rides smooth and stable. But as soon as you touch the brake pedal, the steering wheel begins to shake violently in your hands, accompanied by a rhythmic pulsing in the pedal. During the summer months, this is one of the most common suspension and braking issues we see. But why does a heavy metal disc suddenly lose its geometry, and how can you prevent it?


Thermal Shock: How Hot Metal Reacts to Cold Water

During heavy braking, the friction between the brake pads and the disc generates immense heat. In city traffic or during a steep descent, the working surface of a brake disc can easily heat up to 300–500°C.

Imagine this scenario: you brake hard at an intersection and immediately drive through a deep puddle during a sudden summer downpour. The cold water hits only a portion of the red-hot cast-iron disc. This causes rapid, localized contraction of the metal—a thermal shock. Even a deviation of just a few microns from a flat surface will later cause severe pulsation in the brake caliper and steering mechanism every time you brake.

A common mistake after aggressive driving: After heavy braking, do not keep your foot on the brake pedal while stopped at a red light or in a car wash! Hot brake pads pressed against one spot on the disc prevent even cooling and can alter the metal structure. Shift into ‘N’ or ‘P’ and take your foot off the brake.

Is It Safe to Keep Driving With Warped Discs?

Initially, a slight vibration may seem like nothing more than a nuisance, but it actually causes significant damage:

  • Constant heavy impacts on steering rods and tie-rod ends can quickly wreck your steering rack mechanism.
  • Front wheel bearings are subjected to massive shock loads, leading to premature wear and overheating.
  • In an emergency braking situation, the ABS system may struggle to interpret the disc’s pulsation, which can increase your stopping distance by as much as 20–30%.
